One Messiah confronting another. Anyone get in there with a picture of Shabbetai Zvi or Shimon Bar Kochba?
krint01 From: krint01 Date: October 29th, 2007 08:15 pm (UTC) (Link)
Haha. Not that I know of.
xiphias From: xiphias Date: October 29th, 2007 08:23 pm (UTC) (Link)
I was just talking to my Mom, and mentioned this, and said that it'd be a great piece of street theater to get two people, one with a Jews for Shabbatai Zvi t-shirt and sign, and another with a Jews for Bar Kochba getup, find a Jews for Jesus person, and get into a huge argument with each other, in front of him.

She said that this sounded like great fun, and wants to be part of it if I can get it together. . . .

wow, I recognize those shirts from when I was in San Francisco a couple years ago. The Jews for Jesus faction out there didn't seem quite as militant as this pair!

I moved to SF from New England (CT) eleven months ago and I have never seen any Jews for Jesus. Come to think of it, the Jewish life here is so minimal compared to back in New England and NYC!

ryuutchi From: ryuutchi Date: October 30th, 2007 07:59 am (UTC) (Link)
Pfft. I went to school with a couple. And I've gotten into random arguments on MUNI with 'em too.
eireangus From: eireangus Date: October 30th, 2007 02:32 pm (UTC) (Link)
I think it's because I don't spend a lot of time in SF and never use the MUNI. I live in San Carlos and travel to the city only once in a while. I am sure if I stayed in the city for a longer period of time I would see them.
ryuutchi From: ryuutchi Date: October 30th, 2007 04:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, that'd do it.

I see them more downtown, especially in the big tourist centers like Powell. But evangelicals of all stripes seem to like the captive audiences on MUNI. I've been accosted by Mormons there too. It's entertaining. (MUNI: It's not just public transportaion, it's performance art!)

I love that they are going head-to-head in front of a lingerie shop!

they both look like cults to me...
theonetruetiny From: theonetruetiny Date: October 29th, 2007 08:28 pm (UTC) (Link)
I'll take Chabad over Jews for Jesus any day of the week. At least Chabad doesn't bestow divinity on a human and say that if you don't accept it, you're going to Hell.
stone_ From: stone_ Date: October 29th, 2007 08:47 pm (UTC) (Link)
At least Chabad doesn't ... say that if you don't accept it, you're going to Hell. ... to your face.
krint01 From: krint01 Date: October 29th, 2007 08:49 pm (UTC) (Link)
Course not.

They'd call it Gehenna.

:)
theonetruetiny From: theonetruetiny Date: October 29th, 2007 08:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
That's a fair point.

Oh, and at first I thought you included the bit about divinity on a human, which made the "to your face" part really confusing. :)
lavendersparkle From: lavendersparkle Date: October 29th, 2007 10:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
Well, at least they'd have better food and more booze.

masturbation in the end for both sides

almost as confusing as the earlier 'to your face' comment.

but yeah, chabad chulent over JforJ piggies in a blanket, anyday.
bobobutt From: bobobutt Date: October 30th, 2007 02:33 am (UTC) (Link)
yeah that lady is not very lubavitcher.

the jews for jesus don't even have a chance. unless they start cooking, or maybe offering non-parve sweets.
themoreyouclean From: themoreyouclean Date: October 29th, 2007 10:41 pm (UTC) (Link)
Dueling messiahs in front of Magic Corsets. That's brilliant!
boroparkpyro From: boroparkpyro Date: October 29th, 2007 10:57 pm (UTC) (Link)
eh.

Schneersohn, Jesus, Shabtai Tzvi...

even Bar Kokhba, who kicked ass, doesn't measure up.

Forget all those *other* false messiahs...

Frankists have more fun!
harfang From: harfang Date: October 30th, 2007 01:03 am (UTC) (Link)
The first time I visited New York, which is 20 years ago now, the Jews for Jesus were in force at the airport and had T-shirts that just said "Y'SHUA" on the back. In that pseudo-Hebraic lettering that we generally use to be funny, you know?

Thanks for the laugh. That whole thing with the crown is nice and creepy. Uhm, I can't read those signs with no vowels present... anyone feel like translating?

Not only with the elbows, but... isn't that her real hair??
jordanfstop From: jordanfstop Date: October 30th, 2007 03:42 am (UTC) (Link)
"yechi adoneinu moreinu vrabeinu, melech hamoshiach l'olam voed."

it's a chant used by the chabad moshicists
harfang From: harfang Date: October 30th, 2007 04:22 am (UTC) (Link)
Right, I know about their obsession with Moshiach... but if they're carrying those, does it mean they're among the Lubavitchers that still believe Schneerson was The Guy? Or are they honoring/quoting him?

Thanks :)
From: _josh Date: October 30th, 2007 07:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
A small portion of Chabad believes that Schneerson ZTzL was/is Moshiach and that he is, presumably, coming back. The "yechi" essentially says as much.

Incidentally, there's really nothing halachically wrong with the Meshichist position. It's just a little off-putting because it's so similar to Yoshke.

There is an even smaller group within the Chabad Meshichists, called Elokists. The less said about them, the better.
krint01 From: krint01 Date: October 30th, 2007 08:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
What do the Elokists believe?
summerrose From: summerrose Date: October 30th, 2007 10:10 pm (UTC) (Link)
That the late Lubavitcher Rebbe is God, assuming that the above poster is referring to the people I think he is.
From: _josh Date: October 31st, 2007 12:06 am (UTC) (Link)
I am. :(
harfang From: harfang Date: October 30th, 2007 11:44 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks for the clarification :) ...So, did Eliyahu ever reportedly appear to anyone and say Menachem was the Messiah? Wouldn't halacha require that?
From: _josh Date: October 30th, 2007 11:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
The thing is that Schneerson died before revealing himself, so presumably when he comes back Eliyahu haNavi will be with him. Again, theoretically, the messiah could be somebody who is currently dead. It's just that they're not the messiah until they, you know, start messiahing. Last I checked, that ain't happened yet. Therefore, it is inaccurate to describe either Yoshke or Schneerson as the messiah.
harfang From: harfang Date: October 31st, 2007 12:12 am (UTC) (Link)
I didn't know halacha specifically allowed you to die first, but I guess it makes sense, what with the Christianity and all. That is awfully convenient. ;P

Despite their overabundance, I think that velvet paintings of Yoshke look a lot less ridiculous than those of the Rebbe. Therefore I'm tempted to break with the crowd here, as long as it's merely a hypothetical argument -- along the lines of whether Moshe could beat up Yoshke. (Which, come on, DUH.)
audreym From: audreym Date: October 30th, 2007 03:04 am (UTC) (Link)
Why do these scream "macro me" but I'm blanking on what to write... its so sacreligious but any ideas?

I'd have Chabad over J4J any day. (And I'm B'nai Noach)

Oh, but those messianic "Jewish" tv shows are so lulzy... especially at like 2 am.

LOL I like it.

The baby in your icon is cute! Your son(s)/daughter(s)? How old?

That's my son. At the time the photos were taken, he was about 4 months old.

Hmmmm maybe. I dunno.

Add me to the Chabad over J4J any day crowd. Maybe that's where the woman in the sleeveless dress and her own uncovered hair is coming from.
